The “Secrets of herring rejection” tour means entertainment for the whole family with an opportunity to experience the particular local charm of the windy city. This excursion to the old Liepāja warehouse will captivate not only with stories and expositions, but also with scents and tastes, offering an all-sense adventure.
The Liepāja “Secrets of herring rejection” is a former fish grading storehouse, where back in times, fishermen brought their Atlantic herring for sorting from all around Europe, selecting the “matje”, “spent” and “tornbelly” herring. Today you can learn here about the history of Liepāja and these categories applied to the fish selection process. After the sorting, herring was packed in barrels and shipped to Norway, Germany, Russia and many other countries. Those were the years when Liepāja was one of the largest and most prosperous ports in the Russian Empire. Flows of emigrants streamed to Liepāja to take the Liepāja – New York steamer boats and set off in search of a better life in the New World. At the same time the city developed rapidly as a SPA resort with its typical entertainment and recreation centres – hotels, luxury cinemas and magical circus.
All these hundred years old events are entwined in an hour-long, interactive “Secrets of the herring rejection” tour and revealed through a bitter love story, allowing visitors to feel and experience the whole of it.
The sensory experience of the tour will also allow it to be enjoyed by blind and visually impaired people. Perfectly adapted for people with visual impairment, interactive “Secrets of the herring rejection” tour will be available from September 1, becoming the first such tour in the Baltics.
