This year, on March 18, at 7:00 PM, all residents of Liepāja and city guests are invited to the central event of Liepāja’s 400th birthday – the concert performance “Personal Code: Liepāja”, which will gather the townspeople in the square by the concert hall “Great Amber”.
The concert will be opened and introduced by the chiming of Liepāja’s church bells and the horns of ships moored along the canal, thus marking one of the city’s most important codes – ceaseless encounters.
The concert will showcase songs that are deeply embedded in Liepāja’s identity, along with the brand-new song cycle “Lake and Sea”, specially composed for this occasion by Uldis Marhilevičs and poet Guntars Račs. This story will also highlight people without whom the story of Liepāja would be unimaginable.
“The evening’s program will be interwoven with the theme of encounters, providing an opportunity to experience and feel both a shared and personal unique connection with Liepāja. On this evening, Liepāja’s past and present, its people and music, its lake and sea, the vast breath of the world, and the heartbeat of Liepāja will all come together. “Personal Code: Liepāja” will be told, sung, and performed by musicians, actors, dancers, and other artists from different generations, complemented by a specially designed stage setting, video animations, and a play of light and sound,” says the creative team.
The concert performance will be narrated, sung, and acted out by actors Agnese Jēkabsone and Mārtiņš Vilsons, along with performances by Carnival Youth, Uldis Marhilevičs, Ivo Fomins, Aija Andrejeva, Shipsea, Ance Krauze, Andris Ērglis, Igo, Laura Bulava, SourJ, Ainars Virga, Armands Alksnis, Jānis Strazds, Roberts Dinters, Jānis Kalniņš, Valters Sprūdžs, Andris Buiķis, Māris Zīlmanis, Edgars Jānis Kārkliņš, Mārtiņš Zujs, Robins Jānis Lellis; and dancers choreographed by Liene Grava. Various creative collectives from Liepāja will also participate in the event.
The concert performance “Personal Code: Liepāja” will take place on March 18, 2024, and its goal is to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the city together with the people of Liepāja and visitors, honoring the city’s history and envisioning its future.
Concert attendees are invited to arrive at the venue – the square by the concert hall “Great Amber” – from 6:30 PM, with the concert starting at 7:00 PM. The duration of the event is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Admission is free.
