According to data from the Central Statistical Bureau, 30,991 guests were served in Liepāja’s accommodations in the second quarter of 2024, which is 3.7% more than in the same period last year. The number of overnight stays increased by 2.7%, reaching 53,492 nights. The sharpest increase was observed in June, when the total number of overnight guests rose by 13.9%, and the number of overnight stays increased by 15.3%. In the first half of 2024, the number of guests staying in Liepāja’s accommodations was 7.7% higher than in the same period last year.
The average length of stay in Liepāja’s accommodations in the second quarter was 1.73 nights. The average bed occupancy rate was 31.4%, while room occupancy was 39.1%. The highest occupancy rate was observed in June, with 41.8% of Liepāja’s accommodation beds and 49.3% of rooms occupied.
The number of Latvian tourists staying in Liepāja’s accommodations decreased by 2.8%, with 18,898 guests from other municipalities of Latvia staying in Liepāja from April to June. The number of nights spent by local tourists decreased by 2.9%, totalling 31,653 nights, with an average stay of 1.67 in the second quarter of this year.
The number of foreign guests in Liepāja’s accommodations increased by 15.7% compared to 2023 (12,093 people), while the number of nights spent increased by 12.1% (21,839 nights). The average length of stay for foreign tourists in Liepāja’s accommodations in the second quarter of this year was 1.81 nights.
Guests from 84 foreign countries stayed in Liepāja during the second quarter of this year. The most frequent visitors were from Lithuania (4,675 overnight stays; a decrease of 0.9%), followed by Germany (1,528; +28.8%), Estonia (810; +39.9%), Denmark (559; +60.2%), the USA (522; +46.2%), Poland (445, -7.1%), Finland (401, +35%), Sweden (342; +97.7%), the Netherlands (253; +74.5%), and the United Kingdom (211; -36.5%).
In the second quarter of this year, 4,802 visitors were served in person at the Liepāja Regional Tourism Information Office, which is 13.3% more than the previous year. Of these visitors, 968 were Latvian tourists, 1,748 were foreign tourists, and 2,086 were locals from Liepāja who visited the office to purchase gifts with the city’s symbols, the Liepāja gift card, or to obtain information about events in Liepāja and the South Kurzeme region or sightseeing places in Kurzeme and throughout Latvia. Among foreign visitors, tourists from Lithuania (33% of all foreign visitors), Germany (31.8%), Poland, France, the USA, and the United Kingdom were the most frequent seekers of information.
