From 16 to 22 September, Liepāja will host European Mobility Week, during which residents are invited to take part in its events and discover the advantages of sustainable mobility. The central event of the week will be on 20 September, when participants of the collective bike ride “Car-Free Day” will cycle to Liepāja Airport, where a variety of educational activities will be waiting. Throughout the week, everyone is welcome to join free guided tours.
At the beginning of the week, special attention will be given to the history of Liepāja’s tram. For four evenings, from 16 to 19 September, locals and city guests are invited to take part in the two-hour tour “Following the Tram’s Footsteps. Through Time”, leading along the routes where the tram once ran (see the website for tour times and meeting points). On 22 September, there will also be an opportunity to visit Liepāja’s tram depot. The number of participants for the depot tour is limited, so early registration is recommended by filling out the application form.
The central event of European Mobility Week in Liepāja will be the “Car-Free Day” bike ride on 20 September. The ride will start at 12:00 from Rožu iela 6, near Liepāja City Council. Participants are invited to gather and register from 11:00. The one-hour route will finish at Liepāja Airport’s parking area. Please note that children under 16 are required to wear helmets, while for others it is strongly recommended.
At the finish line, participants will be welcomed with various environment- and mobility-themed activities as well as a meal. There will be an opportunity to learn about Liepāja Airport and the airBaltic Pilot Academy, as well as the Aircraft Mechanic training programme offered by Liepāja State Technical School. During the event, several organisations will also be present, including the Ministry of Transport and CSDD, offering activities such as trying out “drunk goggles” and testing your reaction skills. SIA Liepājas ūdens will demonstrate experiments on drinking water preparation and composition, and reveal what happens on the other side of the sewage system. Other fun and educational activities for the whole family will also be available.
A limited number of participants will also have the chance to take part in guided tours of the Aviasabiedrība Liepāja territory. These will be assigned by lottery, and only participants with a valid ID will be admitted.
To minimise the environmental impact of the event, participants are encouraged to bring a blanket or mat to sit on, as well as their own soup bowl, spoon, and water bottle.
This year’s European Mobility Week theme is “Mobility for All”, emphasising that everyone – regardless of residence, income, gender, or abilities – should have the opportunity to move safely, sustainably, and equally.
European Mobility Week in Liepāja is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on their travel habits and find greener, healthier alternatives that help reduce congestion and air pollution, while also improving personal well-being. This year’s focus is on creating shared public spaces where pedestrians, cyclists, and different modes of transport can coexist.
