Liepāja in the world

Liepāja in the Baltics

  • Liepāja was the first city (1899) in the Baltics which had an electric tram line – the most modern mode of transportation at the time.

  • The Liepāja Symphony Orchestra is the oldest orchestra in the Baltic States.
  • Liepāja has the only diving training school in the Baltics.

Liepāja in Latvia

  • Liepāja – the capital of Latvia. For a short time in 1919 Liepāja had to take on the role of the capital city due to the fact that the Latvian Provisional government was located onboard the steamship “Saratow” in the Port of Liepāja after a coup d’état by the German Army.
  • The second city in Latvia with such a rich heritage of art nouveau. There are over 70 art nouveau buildings in the city.
  • Liepāja is the only city besides Riga to provide transportation by air, land, and sea. You can fly from Liepāja to Riga in 27 minutes.
  • The 3 km long Liepāja Seaside Park with its area of 50 hectares is one of the largest planted parks in Latvia. There are around 140 different local and foreign tree species available to see in the park.
  • The largest drum set in Latvia is found in the Seaside Park at the end of Peldu street.
  • The longest amber necklace can be found at the House of Craftsmen.
  • The oldest Latvian professional theatre is The Liepāja Theatre.
  • The wooden altar of St. Anne’s Lutheran Church is the largest and artistically the most significant wood-carving in Baroque style in Latvia.
  • The longest zipline in a scenic location – over the water reservoir in the Leisure Park “Beberliņi”
