This wide space was originally used for the training of soldiers and their parades. Trees were planted here only at the beginning of the 20th century. On the 300th anniversary of Liepāja in 1925, the president of Latvia Jānis Čakste, along with several other heads of the city and the nation, planted a linden tree in each corner. The square is named after the first president of Latvia – Jānis Čakste – in honour of this event.

The network of pathways and greenery existing in pre-war Latvia was restored during the square’s reconstruction in 2013. A lighted fountain and quotes from the first president of Latvia on metal slabs were added to the square. A stately Latvian flag measuring 5 by 10 metres is raised 35 metres above the roofs of the old town. The square also happens to be the highest point in Liepāja at 11 metres above sea level.

Jānis Čakste square is a favourite gathering spot for locals – both in the darker months of the year for events celebrating the independence of Latvia and in summer for outdoor music and dance concerts. The fountain attracts a lot of kids in the summer providing a chance for both getting refreshed or just playing around.
