The Liepaja Museum branch, “Liepaja Occupation Museum”, was opened on 21 January 2001. Its mission is to preserve the collective historical memory of the people in order to strengthen their national self-confidence, which serves as the ideological and emotional basis of statehood. The museum aims to explain the issues surrounding the loss of statehood and the history of the periods of occupation. The branch is located in the building that served as the headquarters of the Liepāja branch of the Latvian Popular Front during the Awakening.
